　　父亲节的由来

　　Sonora Dodd, of Washington, first had the idea of a "father's day." She thought of the idea for Father's Day while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909. Sonora wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart. Smart, who was a Civil War veteran, was widowed when his wife died while giving birth to their sixth child. Mr. Smart was left to raise the newborn and his other five children by himself on a rural farm in eastern Washington state. After Sonora became an adult she realized the selflessness her father had shown in raising his children as a single parent. It was her father that made all the parental sacrifices and was, in the eyes of his daughter, a courageous, selfless, and loving man. Sonora's father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Father's Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910. President Calvin Coolidge, in 1924, supported the idea of a national Father's Day. Then in 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day. President Richard Nixon signed the law which finally made it permanent in 1972.

　　她父亲生日这天。州政府采纳了她的建议，仓促间将父亲节定为19日，即1909年6月第3个星期日。翌年，多德夫人所在的斯坡堪市正式庆祝这一节日，市长宣布了父亲节的文告，定这天为全州纪念日。以后，其他州也庆贺父亲节。在父亲节这天，人们选择特定的鲜花来表示对父亲的敬意。人们采纳了多德夫人伯建议，佩戴红玫瑰向健在的父亲们表示爱戴，佩戴白玫瑰对故去的父亲表示悼念。后来在温哥华，人们选择了佩戴白丁香，宾夕法尼亚人用蒲公英向父亲表示致意。

　　为了使父亲节规范化，各方面强烈呼吁议会承认这个节日。1972年，尼克松总统正式签署了建立父亲节的议会决议。这个节日终于以法律的形式确定了下来，并一直沿用至今。
