A weak old man lived with his son, his daughter-in-law, and his four-year-old grandson. His eyes couldn’t see clearly, his hands trembled, and his step was unstable.
The family would eat together nightly at the dinner table. But the elderly grandfather’s shaky hands and failing sight made eating rather difficult. Peas rolled off his spoon, dropping to the floor. When he grasped his glass of milk, it often spilled clumsily at the tablecloth.
With this happening almost every night, the son and daughter-in-law became irritated with the mess. So they decided to do something with the old man — they set a small table at the corner. There, the grandfather ate alone while the rest of the family enjoyed their dinner at the dinner table. Since the grandfather had broken a dish or two, his food was served in wooden bowls. Sometimes when the family glanced in the grandfather’s direction, he had a tear in his eye as he ate alone. Still, the only words the couple had for him were sharp warnings when he dropped a fork or spilled food. The four-year-old watched it all in silence.
One evening, before supper, the father noticed his son playing with wood pieces on the floor. He asked the child sweetly: “What are you making?” Just as sweetly, the boy replied, “Oh, I’m making a little bowl for you and mama to eat your food from when I grow up.” The four-year-old smiled and went back to work.
These words so struck the parents that they were speechless. Then tears streamed down their cheeks. Though no words were spoken, both knew what must be done. That evening, the husband took the grandfather’s hand and gently led him back to the family table.
For the rest of his days, the grandfather ate every meal with the family. And for some reason, neither the husband nor the wife seemed to care any longer when a fork was dropped, milk was spilled or the table cloth was soiled.

Great Expectations is one of Charles Dickens’s best-known works. It is set in England in the early 1800s. Dickens uses Pip, the main character, to tell the story.
Pip lives with his older sister and her husband Joe. Pip’s sister seldom has a kind word to say, but Joe is a kind and simple man, who would rather die than see any harm come to Pip. Pip, who is seven years old when the story begins, is in a misty field of tombs when a man appears and frightens him. Mist(薄雾)is a symbol of danger and uncertainty in Great Expectations. Classic novels often have symbols which add interest, tension or deeper meaning to the text to guide readers.
When Pip is about eighteen years old, a very generous stranger gives Pip a lot of money, which sets him free from financial worries. Pip makes the sudden decision to move from Kent, which is a constant reminder of his shabby beginnings, to the bright lights of London. However, money and education have changed him. Before long he develops the shortcomings of being shallow and having prejudice, even against his old companions. Pip dislikes it when Joe comes to visit him. He has rigid(固执的)ideas of what it means to be civil and to be a gentleman, and is embarrassed by Joe because he doesn’t fit these.
Pip is determined to become a gentleman and winning Estella’s love. Estella is a beautiful girl, and for Pip, she is a symbol of education and money. What it really means to be a gentleman is an important theme in Great Expectations. Is an educated person with a lot of money a gentleman? Or is a gentleman somebody who is kind and good to his friends?
By the end of the novel, Pip has changed a lot. He learns that wealth does not buy happiness and that friends are more important than a fancy education. This change in Pip is called character development and is an important part of any novel. Does Joe forgive Pip? Does Pip get the girl of his dream? You will just have to read it yourself to find out!
60. Which of the following about Great Expectations is TRUE?
A. It uses mist as a symbol of hope in the darkness.
B. Its theme is the true love between Pip and Estella.
C. Dickens was inspired to write it when Pip told him the story.
D. It deals with the theme of what it means to be a gentleman.
61. What can we know about Pip according to the passage?
A. He spends his childhood with his strict sister and her rich husband.
B. Money and education have soon changed Pip into a caring gentleman.
C. He happens to find a great fortune in the tomb field and moves to London.
D. Pip realizes that friendship matters more than money and education in the end.

Amber, 16, has been in four foster-care homes(寄养家庭)in two years. Now she is getting a makeover(精心打扮)at the mall to be filmed in a television station in Boise, Idaho, which may help her find a permanent family that does the ordinary things families do — go on picnics, eat out, and watch movies together.
Ten years ago, teenagers such as Amber were so hard to place with adoptive families that hardly anyone tried. If you talked about finding a home for an older child, that meant the kid was 7 or 8. But today, people are increasingly willing to adopt those who are 9 years old or older, and most experts believe the phenomena will continue.
Of course, the teens often need as much encouragement and advice as the future parents do. In St. Louis, Missouri, Project Teen Plus provides a support group to help teenagers talk about their fears and doubts about being adopted, for many of them have lived in institutions so long that they have no idea what life in a family is like. And teens often have mixed feelings about joining a new family. Many teens in foster care are worried that being adopted means having to reject their birth families. One adoption expert suggests finding out the reasons for teenagers’ resistance and offering the choice of remaining in touch with their birth families after entering adoptive homes.
The key to success seems to be careful preparation and patience of both the teen and the family. So a teenager usually spends six to nine months with a future family before an adoption is finally decided. For example, a couple decided to open their home to Michael, 17. For ten months, the couple and the boy struggled to get to know and accept one another. But Michael’s 18th birthday brought about change. The big event was not only his first birthday with his adoptive family but also the first time he had ever been given birthday gifts and a cake. For Michael’s new parents, the rewards have been great. “You’re not just helping someone else,” says Father. “You’re making a decision to grow as a family.”
67. The purpose of mentioning Amber in the first paragraph is ___________.
A. to show the readers the ordinary things families do
B. to help Amber find a permanent family to adopt her
C. to introduce the topic of teenager adoption to readers
D. to indicate that teenager girls are eager to be film stars
68. According to the passage, why do teenagers fear and doubt about being adopted?
A. They spend too much time living all by themselves.
B. They don’t know what their life will be in a new family.
C. They can’t get enough support from some institutions.
D. They talk less with the future parents about adoption.
69. Many teens in foster care think being adopted means _______.
A. no longer seeing their friends
B. saying good-bye to their pets
C. having to reject their birth families
D. losing their choice of education
70. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Success of adoption calls for patience and preparation.
B. Teenagers are encouraged to place with foster care.
C. Foster parents share worries with their future children.
D. The family needs great financial support to adopt children.

November is Alzheimer’s(老年痴呆症)Awareness Month in the United States. Alzheimer’s is a frightening disease, not only for those who suffer from memory loss, but also for their loved ones. But researchers in California say a new way of treating the disease is showing promise for reversing some of that memory loss. The new treatment combines western medicine with eastern philosophy — ideas rooted in Asian religions.
Dr. Dale Bredesen is with the Easton Center for Alzheimer’s Disease Research at UCLA. He says nine of ten patients suffering from Alzheimer’s noted improvements in their memory. He says the traditional use of only one treatment just did not work with many patients. The new therapy(疗法)treats the whole patient, not just parts of the patient. “They have either taken a single drug to try with Alzheimer’s, which has been a failure repeatedly, or they have tried without any background, simply saying, ‘Okay, try exercise, try changing your diet,’ these sorts of things, and there has not been any way to understand how these things contribute to the disease.”
According to Dr. Bredesen, there is a constant balance of the brain remembering and forgetting. Many things, including a person’s lifestyle, can create an imbalance in brain activity, which can lead to memory loss. Dr. Bredesen creates an individualized treatment for each patient. He does this by taking images of their brain, testing their blood and asking many questions about their daily life. During the treatments, subjects were told to eat more fish, avoid carbohydrates and processed foods, and take vitamin B12, D3 and fish oil. They also practiced yoga(瑜伽), sat quietly for 20 minutes twice each day and slept more.
Dr. Bredesen describes this new therapy as combining western understanding of the human body with the eastern method of looking at the whole patient. For the nine patients whose memory improved, it usually happened within three to six months. The 10th patient was too far along in the disease for any improvement to be observed.
The UCLA center is now working with 30 additional patients as it moves to expand its research. The researchers say they followed some patients up to two and a half years and the memory improvements remained.
71. The underlined word “reversing” in the second paragraph probably means __________.
A. recovering B. repeating C. reviewing D. replacing
72. According to Dr. Bredesen, the problem of the traditional treatment lies in that __________.
A. the patients take only a single drug
B. the patients are not given a healthy diet
C. the patients are required to exercise too much
D. doctors lack overall understanding of the patients
73. In Dr. Bredesen’s new treatment, ______________.
A. the doctors ask the patients to believe in Asian religions
B. the doctors pay more attention to the patient’s lifestyle
C. the patients are forbidden from eating meat or bread
D. the patients have to sit quietly and sleep during the day
74. The passage is mainly about ___________.
A. how lifestyle changes help treat Alzheimer’s patients
B. the effects of eastern philosophy on Alzheimer’s patients
C. the background of Alzheimer’s Awareness Month in the United States
D. combining western medicine with eastern philosophy to treat Alzheimer’s

a. the good effects of the new treatment and its further research
b. the specific methods of the new overall treatment
c. the problems of the traditional treatment
d. the introduction of the Alzheimer’s and the new treatment

As time goes on, the New Year has come. I often think what my school life will be like in 2015.
It will be only several months before I take part in the college entrance exams, so I will have to be very busy with my lessons. Longing for studying computer science in a famous university, I must work harder to make my dream come true.
There is no doubt that I must strike a balance between work and rest. I will take more regular exercise, such as running and some ball games. Besides, I will also enjoy reading and playing the piano. Not only will they broaden my horizon, but also be good ways of relaxation.
As Napoleon Hill puts it, “Create a definite plan for carrying out your desire and begin at once, whether you are ready or not, to put this plan into action.” I do believe my school life of 2015 will be much richer and more colorful.

Text 1
M: May I order a taxi for tomorrow in your hotel? I’m going to catch the train at 6 o’clock in the morning.
W: Sure. And we will deliver your baggage to your room soon.
Text 2
W: It’s already 9:00. I wonder if Tom will come.
M: We were supposed to be here at 8:30. He told me he would set off at 8:00.
Text 3
W: Can I try another pair of shoes, please? These are too small, and I don’t like the color either.
M: Certainly. Then I will get you a size 9 with a different color.
Text 4
M: Julia, you are late again. What’s the reason this time? Your alarm clock didn’t work again?
W: No, sir. The bus I took got stuck in a traffic jam, so I had to walk here.
Text 5
W: Where do you think you are going?
M: I’m going to the park to play football.
W: Oh, no! You have to sweep the floor and clean the rooms. But first of all, you have homework to finish, young man!
Text 6
M: Hi, Kate. Have any plans for the weekend?
W: Yeah, I’m really excited. I’m going to New York City.
M: Oh, my roommate’s going there too. Are you driving? Maybe you two can ride together.
W: No. I’ve already got my train ticket. I’m visiting a friend Laura I met last summer in the music camp. I shared a room with her.
M: You two probably have a lot to talk about. Are you from New York?
W: No, I’m from California. I’ve never been to New York before. Guess what we are going to do on Saturday night?
M: Something to do with music, I bet.
W: Right, we are going to a concert.
M: Wow, that’s great.
Text 7
M: Excuse me.
W: Yes. Can I help you?
M: Do you remember me? I just had lunch here half an hour ago.
W: Of course.
M: I think I lost my wallet here.
W: Really? I didn’t see anything.
M: Has anyone sat at this table since we left?
W: No. It’s been empty the whole time. I remember, sir, that your friend took the bill. You didn’t pay for the lunch yourself, did you?
M: No. My friend did. Hmm…Every time I sit down I usually take out my wallet. I usually put it next to me on the table.
W: Maybe you lost it before you came here. Or maybe you left it at home.
M: Hmm. I’ll go home and check. Maybe you’re right.
W: I’m sorry, sir.
M: That’s all right. Thank you anyway.
Text 8
M: Hi, Lucy. Guess what? My wife and I just bought a new house!
W: Congratulations, Frank! Where is the house?
M: It’s in the city, close to Pine Park. It will be great for our children and pets.
W: I love that park. Actually, I live right next to it, too. We can meet there with our families!
M: That sounds wonderful! We’ll move in next month.
W: Let me know if you need any help moving in. My husband and I can help you on the weekend.
M: Thank you. We can use all the help we can get! At least the kids don’t have to go back to school until September.
W: Yeah. I am so excited that you are moving to our neighborhood!
M: Thanks. We look forward to seeing you soon!
Text 9
W: Let’s go to the gym after work today, Tom. You look like you could use a good workout.
M: What are you trying to say? I look fat or something?
W: No, not at all! I think you’d better cheer yourself up. Lately, I’ve seen you almost fall asleep at your office table in the middle of the day.
M: That’s not only because I’m tired. I’m also just bored out of my mind!
W: Well, working out regularly will also give you something fun to look forward to at the end of the day.
M: Well, it’s not like I’ve never been to the gym. I used to go almost every day when I was in high school.
W: Uh, that was a long time ago, Tom.
M: Yeah, don’t remind me! All right, you know what? Let’s go to the gym on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
W: Great! Do you have workout clothes?
M: I can borrow some from John in the marketing department…
Text 10
M: Hello, everyone. Welcome back to tonight’s A Closer Look. I’m Daniel Richards. Here in the studio is Jennifer Thompson. Let’s see what story she’s going to share with us.
W: Thanks, Daniel. Hello, everyone. I’m honored to be here with you tonight. The story I’m going to share with you tonight is about Carla Delgado, a ten-year-old girl from Miami, Florida. Carla was born with only one leg, but she didn’t let that stop her. She learned how to push herself in a wheelchair by the age of three, and she never let anyone else do it. At the age of four, she was able to walk with a special walking stick. One year later, she started kindergarten, and she could run faster than most of her classmates. She told everyone that they shouldn’t feel sorry for her or treat her differently. She made friends easily. Although it was not very convenient for her to play football or rugby, she was the star of the basketball team when she was in Grade Three. For the last two years, Carla has been travelling to schools around the country. She talks to students about how hard she has worked, and about the importance of respect. She also talks to other disabled children and gives them hope and inspiration. She always tells them, “Don’t let anyone tell you that you’re different.”
