　　Congratulations, you have been accepted into Hokkaido University. What do you need to do now? Most students are excited, anxious, and often times “unaware” of a few processes. Let us take you through the essentials in this section which details all procedures you need to undertake prior to your arrival here. The four must have items are listed below:

　　Airline Ticket

　　Cash. In Japan, most payment are made using cash. You are highly recommended to bring a reasonable amount of money in cash as it may take some time to receive any form of income through a scholarship etc.

　　Certificate of Eligibility & Visa

　　Passport

　　现金。在日本，大部分支付都是用现金。强烈建议你待足量现金，因为再次拿到收入可能需要一定时间，包括获取奖学金。

　　一、Getting a Visa

　　获取签证

　　International students who receive an offer from Hokkaido University need to obtain a visa to enter Japan. To apply for and obtain the visa, a document known as a “Certificate of Eligibility” is required.

　　被北海道大学录取的国际学生需要拿到签证，才能入境日本。为了申请并拿到签证，需要有身份合格证书。

　　Certificate of Eligibility:

　　You must apply for a Certificate of Eligibility as a first step in obtaining your visa. The Certificate of Eligibility is issued by a regional Immigration Bureau in Japan, and it has the advantage of reducing the time required to obtain a visa and complete immigration procedures. Hokkaido University can act as a proxy for the application procedure to obtain the certificate. For further information, you should liaise with the Academic Affairs section at the faculty / graduate school you wish to enter.

　　身份合格证书：

　　为了拿到签证，首先要做的就是申请身份合格证书。身份合格证书由日本区域移民局负责签发，身份合格证书的优势在于减少获取签证和完成移民手续所需的时间。北海道大学在申请程序中可以扮演代理人的角色，帮助你拿到身份合格证书。详情请联系你申请的院系或研究生院的学术教育组。

　　Please Note:

　　It takes one month or more for the certificate to be issued. Please contact your faculty / graduate school well in advance.

　　The expiration date of the certificate is three months from the date of issue. You must enter Japan within this period.

　　You must show this certificate when you go through immigration upon arrival in Japan. Be sure to have it with you on the day.

　　If you are a Japanese Government Scholarship Student however, you do not need to apply for this certificate.

　　注意：

　　签发身份合格证书可能需要一月或数月时间。请提前联系好你申请的院系或研究生院。

　　身份合格证书的有效期为签发日期往后的三个月。你必须在这三个月之内入境日本。

　　到达日本之后必须出示身份合格证书。确保出发当日随身携带好该证书。

　　Visa:

　　A visa is required to enter Japan. In order to obtain this, you need to apply to the Japanese Embassy or Consulate in your country before your departure. The visa will be sealed into your passport. Upon obtaining the Certificate of Eligibility, please submit this with other application forms to the Japanese embassy or consulate in your country. Please be sure to have all other necessary documents with you at the Japanese embassy.

　　需要签证才能入境日本。为了拿到签证，你不需要再出发之前到日本驻华使馆或领事馆申请。签证将被盖章在你的护照上。拿到身份合格证书之前，请将证书和其他申请文件一起提交到日本驻华使馆或领事馆。请确保带上所有需要的证件到日本驻华使馆。

　　二、Health Insurance

　　Premiums and Period of Coverage

　　(The period of coverage must be the same as the academic course term.)

　　In the case of hospitalization, ¥4,000 will be added to the medical insurance benefit (up to 180 days).

　　三、Residency Card

　　居留证

　　As of July 9th, 2012, a new residence card has been introduced for all foreigners who have mid to long term resident status. This residence card is issued to you by Immigration upon arrival in Japan if you happen to come through Narita, Haneda, Chubu or Kansai airport. The card must be carried with you at all times, so be sure to take it with you whenever you go out.

　　2012年7月9日开始，推出了新的居留证;新居留证适用于居留时间为中期到长期的外国人士。如果你在Narita, Haneda, Chubu 或 Kansai 机场下机，在你到达日本之后，该居留证将由移民局签发给你。必须随时携带该居留证，出门都要随时带上。

　　Check! Check! Check!

　　When you receive your Residence Card, be sure to check it for accuracy. Your name, nationality / region, date of birth and sex on your Residence Card must be exactly the same as the information in your passport. If you find an error, (such as a missing space between any of your names) immediately request the immigration officer at the counter to make the necessary correction. Failure to do this when your Residence Card is originally issued will likely require that you go to Japanese Immigration at a later date, which is usually more time-consuming and troublesome.

　　If the information on your Residence Card differs—even if only slightly—from the information in your passport, it is likely you will be unable to open a bank account or obtain necessary official documents in the future.

　　拿到居留证的时候，一定要核实它的准确性。姓名、国籍(地区)、出生日期、性别必须和你护照上的一致。如果发现有误(比如名字文字间有缺失空隙)，请立即要求移民局的工作人员在前台给你改正。如果不这样做，很可能往后你还得去一趟移民局。再去一趟一般都比较费时，比较麻烦。

　　如果居留证上的信息和护照信息有出入，哪怕是很小的出入，你后面也很可能因此而无法办理银行账户，或者获取必要的官方文件。

　　I lost my card!

　　In the event your residence card is lost, stolen or severely damaged, please apply for a new card within 14 days (or on the day you re-enter Japan) at your Regional Immigration Office.

　　居留证丢失

　　如果居留证丢失、被盗或者损坏严重，请在14天之内到当地移民局重新申请(或者在入境日本的当天申请)。

　　What you need to obtain your Residency Card:

　　Passport

　　Residence card (if damaged)

　　Application to re-issue the resident card

　　Document issued by the police upon reporting the loss or theft to them, police or a disaster victim certificate issued by the Fire Department in place of your residence card

　　A passport size photograph

　　Permission to engage in remunerative activities

　　You may apply for a replacement residence card even if it is not severely damaged at your Regional Immigration Office (however you are required to pay a fee for re-issuing.) For this you need：

If, for example, you have trouble reading Japanese documents or do not understand procedures at the ward office or just want to know where to go shopping, please feel free to talk to our multilingual staff.

　　Joining student social groups such as HUISA and SACLA is a great way to make friends and have fun while studying at Hokkaido University. The social events vary from group to group but can include international food festivals, trips away exploring the nature of Hokkaido or sporting events. Once you arrive, we recommend you sign up!
