History of UQ
Established through a 1909 Act of State Parliament, The University of Queensland was the first university in the state and was officially founded on April 16, 1910, with the gazettal of appointments to the first UQ Senate. Teaching started in 1911 in Old Government House in George Street, Brisbane. In the first year there were three faculties – Arts, Science and Engineering – and 83 students (60 men and 23 women).
After World War I, the University expanded rapidly and soon outgrew its inner-city location. In 1922, an additional site in Victoria Park (now occupied by the Medical School) was secured. Four years later, Dr James O’Neil Mayne and his sister Miss Mary Emelia Mayne provided funds to buy the St Lucia site where the University’s main campus is now located. Construction started on the St Lucia site in 1937 and the first building, later named the Forgan Smith Building after the Premier of the day, was completed in 1939. During World War II, it became the advanced headquarters for the Allied Land Forces in the South West Pacific.
In 1990, the University merged with the Queensland Agricultural College at (now Gatton), 80 kilometres west of Brisbane, resulting in the union of the two oldest higher education institutions in the State and producing a substantial increase in enrolments. The former Queensland Agricultural College enrolled its first students in 1897 and the two institutions had a long history of cooperation in teaching and research activities.
In 1999, UQ opened a major campus in the provincial centre of Ipswich, taking over a site previously used by the Challinor Centre mental health facility. In January 2015 this campus transferred to the University of Southern Queensland but UQ continued to teach at the USQ Ipswich campus until 2016 to assist particular students complete their studies.
Established in 2010, UQ’s major clinical health and research teaching location at Herston is now UQ's third campus.
Teaching and learning excellence
Skilled and motivated teachers are integral to providing positive teaching and learning outcomes for students.
UQ has a strong focus on teaching excellence, having won more Australian Awards for University Teaching than any other in the country and attracting the majority of Queensland's highest academic achievers, as well as top interstate and overseas students.
The educators of UQ are committed to excellence in learning experiences and outcomes for their students.
Research
The UQ Graduate School offers significant support to higher degree by research (HDR) students through a broad range of scholarships and research travel awards, dedicated office spaces, skills training, and professional development opportunities. The University introduced the Career Development Framework– another first nationally – designed to accelerate HDR students’ career development and enhance their employability. Evidence indicates that the University’s research excels in both quality and impact.
The Federal Government’s 2015 Excellence in Research for Australia exercise confirmed The University of Queensland as one of the nation’s top three universities, measured by the quality of its comprehensive range of specialised research fields. UQ’s outstanding critical mass offers researchers significant interdisciplinary capability. The assessment rated 95 per cent of UQ’s broad fields of research as above or well above world standard.
Over the last five years UQ has attracted more Australian Research Council funding for discovery and early-career research than any other Australian university. With three major campuses – located at St Lucia and Herston in Brisbane, and Gatton in South-East Queensland – the University has invested substantially in construction and development, helping create great environments in which to study and research. UQ is committed to developing state-of-the-art learning spaces that are in step with industry demands and expectations.
UQ has established eight research institutes, many with a multidisciplinary focus:
Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology
Global Change Institute
Institute for Molecular Bioscience
Institute for Social Science Research
Mater Research Institute-UQ
Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation
Queensland Brain Institute
Sustainable Minerals Institute.
UQ is also a partner in the Translational Research Institute (TRI) – an Australian-first that represents the future in biomedical research. TRI has the capacity to discover, produce, test and manufacture new treatments and vaccines in one location.
In 2016, UQ attracted more than $368 million in research funding from government, industry and community sources. The University is also grateful to the many alumni and community members who donate towards teaching and research initiatives.
UniQuest, established by UQ in 1984, is one of Australia’s leading research commercialisation companies. UniQuest’s innovation portfolio includes Australia's first blockbuster vaccine Gardasil®, pioneer pain drug developer Spinifex Pharmaceuticals, the internationally acclaimed Triple P – Positive Parenting Program, and UQ’s superconductor technology, which is used in two-thirds of the world's MRI machines.
edX
In late 2013, UQ joined edX – the world’s leading consortium of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), jointly founded by Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
UQ is one of only two Australian charter member universities included in the not-for-profit edX enterprise, and UQx represents this organisation on behalf of the University. UQx works with the University’s academic teaching staff to create and present a range of MOOCs through the edX platform and to further the goals of the UQ Student Strategy with respect to on-campus teaching.
UQx has 33 MOOCs running on edX with more under development. UQx MOOCs cover subjects drawn from many disciplines along with meta-skills courses in employability and teamwork. Since releasing its first course on edX in March 2014, UQx has registered more than 1.8 million participants representing every country.

The campus has expansive landscaped grounds, three lakes, an aquatic centre, tennis courts, eight athletics ovals with a 600-seat grandstand, and facilities for elite rowing. The campus fans out from a 1930s, heritage-listed sandstone Cloister enclosing the Great Court.
Great Court
The heart of The University of Queensland’s St Lucia campus, the Great Court is a popular venue for ceremonies, exhibitions and functions, as well as being the perfect location to relax with friends. Its lush gardens, historic cloister walk and extensive array of carvings dating back to 1939 have ensured a well-deserved place on the Queensland Heritage Register and the Register of the National Trust of Queensland.
Gatton
The history of UQ Gatton dates back to 1897, when the Queensland Agricultural College (QAC) opened as a combined agricultural college and experimental farm. This concluded a 20-year debate by farmers and politicians on ways to boost agricultural production in Queensland.
Guests at the opening ceremony and the special luncheon would have marvelled to know the College would metamorphose to a high school, U.S. Army General Hospital, college of advanced education and finally a Campus of The University of Queensland.
Herston
UQ Herston is home to the Faculty of Medicine, the School of Public Health, the UQ Centre for Clinical Research (UQCCR), and the research activities of the School of Nursing and Midwifery.
